Spain introduces mandatory registration for SMS and RCS sender IDs

From June 7th 2026, companies sending SMS and RCS messages to Spanish numbers will need to comply with a new regulation governing alphanumeric sender IDs, also known as aliases.
Under the new rules, any alias used in SMS and RCS messages to Spain must be registered with the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) and authorized through the messaging provider. Messages sent with unregistered or unauthorized aliases will be blocked.
An alias is the name displayed as the sender of the message; typically a brand or company name. Aliases have been exploited for fraud and impersonation and the regulation aims to address these risks by ensuring that only verified entities can use specific sender IDs.
The registration process requires companies to demonstrate a legitimate link between the alias and their organization. Such as a registered trademark, company name, or domain. Applications are submitted via the CNMC portal using a valid Spanish digital certificate, either by the company itself or through a provider like LINK Mobility. Once submitted, approval can take up to one month.
To ease the transition, a temporary bulk registration window allows companies to register existing sender IDs more efficiently. After this period, all registrations must be handled individually.
